"I believe that the Christian nations as a whole have never grasped the Holocaust. And even though the years are going by, everyone carries around, with a feeling of annoyance and sometimes irritation, his small part in the guilt for the most extraordinary slaughter in history - because it was pointless, because it was not the inherent evil of the Jews that it revealed, but rather of what contemporary, civilized, cultured individuals - we ourselves - are capable. So what is happening now? The opportunity has come along to transform the image of the Jew as martyr into the Jew as executioner." --Francoise Giroud, Le Monde, Paris, as reprinted in English in Ha'aretz, Jerusalem, June 22, 2002

Breaking News from Media Awareness Project

Dr. Trebach WELCOME
Arnold S. Trebach

When I set this site up several years ago, my main interest was the development of better drug policies. That is now only one of my main interests.

Since 9/11, however, I have felt compelled to deal with terrorism, the Middle East, and the fate of Israel and my brother and sister Jews of the United States and the world. Again, as it has been for eons, Jews and Jewish institutions are under attack, or the threat of attack, almost everywhere. I might well have accompanied the epigram above dealing with addicts with another that could have said, "Jews are the enduring scapegoats of history." The events of the past few years have brought that ugly truth home to me once again. At the same time, it is encouraging to see the strong support for Israel and for the rights of Jews at all levels of the American nation, including among the highest ranks of the government. Accordingly, I will deal with all of these issues in addition to drug policy.

HERE IS ONE REASON WHY I NO LONGER CONSIDER MYSELF A MEMBER OF THE NEW LEFT

Column one: Of intellectual bondage
Israeli students speak of the intellectual tyranny of the radical Left on campuses.

"How could you report the war in Iraq if you sided with the Americans?"

"How can you say that George Bush is better than Saddam Hussein?"

These are some of the milder questions I received from an audience of some 150 undergraduate students from Tel Aviv University's Political Science Department. The occasion was a guest lecture I gave last month on my experiences as an embedded reporter with the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division during the Iraq war.

LESSONS OF LONDON, LESSONS OF IRAQ

Lessons of London
By Clifford D. May
The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies
11/25/03

In the streets of London last week, protestors carried signs calling President Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair "war criminals" for having toppled one of the world's bloodiest butchers, a dictator whose henchmen continue to murder Americans and those many Iraqis who are attempting to work with Americans to make Iraq a decent nation.

How many of those protesting had previously demonstrated against Saddam Hussein's slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Kurds, Shias, Marsh Arabs and Iraqi dissidents? About the same number as protested the most recent terrorist bombings of Muslims, Christians and Jews in Turkey: virtually none. [FULL TEXT]

What the Iraqi Generals Tell Us: An Explanation for the Misestimates of Saddam's Weapons.

By James Woolsey
The Weekly Standard
11/24/03

Many have waxed wroth at both the CIA's purported misestimates and the Bush administration's alleged deception regarding stockpiles of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. But although security in Iraq is a vital concern, this WMD stockpile issue looks different in November than it did in October. The deck has been shuffled considerably by recent disclosures (in the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal) that a number of sources now believe the Iraqi generals were themselves deceived by Saddam about units being equipped with WMD and that French and Russian advice may have substantially affected Saddam's behavior on the eve of the war.

To see how the WMD issue has changed, try to imagine the following hypothetical question fired at the director of central intelligence by an irate member of a congressional committee: "Mr. Tenet, how could your so-called experts have believed that Saddam had deployable weapons of mass destruction on the eve of the war just because all of his own generals did?" Or this imaginary rhetorical thrust at the NSC on the floor of the Senate: "Can this White House explain to us how it could be so weak and foolish as to be steered by this cabal--neocons in the Pentagon, the vice president's office, and the Iraqi general officer corps--into adopting the view that WMD stockpiles actually existed in Iraq?" THE JUDEOPHOBIA OF THE ALLEGEDLY LIBERAL LEFT PRESS

Good, Bad and Ugly
By Julie Burchill
The Guardian

Web site: http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,3605,1094325,00.html

As you might have heard, I'm leaving the Guardian next year for the Times, having finally been convinced that my evil populist philistinism has no place in a publication read by so many all-round, top-drawer plaster saints. (Well, that and the massive wad they've waved at me.) Once there, I will compose as many love letters to the likes of Mr Murdoch and Pres Bush as my black little heart desires, leaving those who have always objected to my presence on such a fine liberal newspaper as this to read only writers they agree with, with no chance of spoiled digestion as the muesli goes down the wrong way if I so much as murmur about bringing back hanging. (Public.)

Not only do I admire the Guardian, I also find it fun to read, which in a way is more of a compliment. But if there is one issue that has made me feel less loyal to my newspaper over the past year, it has been what I, as a non-Jew, perceive to be a quite striking bias against the state of Israel. Which, for all its faults, is the only country in that barren region that you or I, or any feminist, atheist, homosexual or trade unionist, could bear to live under. [FULL TEXT]

WE ARE FIGHTING WORLD WAR IV

Target: America
MATTHEW GUTMAN
Jerusalem Post
10/23/03

Last Wednesday's bombing of an American convoy in Gaza represents a 'watershed event' in what former CIA chief James Woolsey calls World War IV.

The din of "specubabble" that followed last Wednesday's bombing of a US diplomatic convoy dredged up a pageant of either irrelevant, nonexistent, or long-since forgotten terrorist groups.

Accusatory fingers have also been pointed in the direction of Hizbullah, al-Qaida (and the hitherto unknown Ansar al-Qaida-Palestine), Fatah splinters such as the Popular Resistance Committees, even Saddam's Ba'athists. [FULL TEXT]

WHO ARE these media jihadis?

Our Media Jihadis
BRET STEPHENS
Jerusalem Post
10/4/03

So here's the question of the week, month, year: After Iraq, will the media ever again allow a democracy to topple a fascist dictatorship?

The question isn't mine but John Reid's. On March 31 at nine o'clock in the morning, the Labour Party Chairman was in 10 Downing Street watching the TV news. On screen were pictures of "distressed Iraqi civilians and dead allied soldiers." Reid became incensed. "The broadcasters are in Iraq not because they want to tell the truth, but because of commercial competition," the Glaswegian told Times Magazine writer Peter Stothard. "It's a disgrace."

As we know, within a few days the media that so irritated Reid got its comeuppance: The Marines entered Baghdad, Saddam's statues came down and, just as Dick Cheney had predicted, Iraqis cheered. But as we also know, that wasn't the end of the war, just the moment when Baathist unrepentants resorted to a death-by-one-thousand-cuts strategy. Ditto for the media unrepentants. They failed to stop the war and they failed to lose the war. But they haven't stopped trying to reverse the result, and it bids fair that they will yet do so. [FULL TEXT]

Contrary to Rice's analysis, recent expressions of Jew-hatred are emblematic of Muslim thinking.

What little Basmallah 'knows'
By DANIEL PIPES
Jerusalem Post
10/28/03

The prime minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad, informed the world last week that, among other things, "Jews rule this world by proxy. They get others to fight and die for them." In reaction, Condoleezza Rice, the US national security adviser, described Mahathir's comments as "hateful, they are outrageous." She then added, "I don't think they are emblematic of the Muslim world."

If only she were right about that.

In fact, Mahathir's views are precisely emblematic of Muslim discourse about Jews symbolized by the standing ovation his speech received from an all-Muslim audience of leaders representing 57 states. Then, a Saudi newspaper reports, when Western leaders criticized Mahathir, "Muslim leaders closed ranks" around him with words of praise (e.g., "very correct," "a very, very wise assessment").

"Our biggest mistake was letting go of the embedded media,"

America's Unheralded Victory
By Caroline Glick
Jerusalem Post
10/5/03

I arrived at Fort Stewart, the home of the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division, early this week to meet with the soldiers and officers of the 2-7 Mechanized Infantry Battalion, 1st Brigade, who had recently returned home after completing their deployment in Iraq. It was with these men that I hitched a ride through Iraq as an embedded reporter during the major combat phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The 3rd Infantry was the main combat force in Iraq from the March 19 invasion through the fall of Baghdad on April 9. After the city's fall, the 1st Brigade took control of neighborhoods on the eastern side of the city, where the bulk of the population lives.

"We relieved the 87th Marine Regiment of their sectors east of the Tigris River. When we arrived, we felt like we had entered the Wild West. Buildings were burning, car-jackings and looting were rampant. We had Iraqi police officers wearing military uniforms armed with AK-47s who we assumed were Iraqi military forces," 1st Brigade Commander Col. William Grimsley explained. "We held the zones until June 5. During those two months we oversaw the transformation of the area from a chaotic environment to an ordered city."

THE JEWS AND THE LEFT

By Fiamma Nirenstein
Jewish World Review
7/15/03

Fiamma Nirenstein is the Jerusalem correspondent for the leading Italian newspaper, La Stampa, as well as for the Italian magazine, Panorama. Her work has appeared in many prestigious magazines and newspapers, including Commentary and The New York Sun. An author of several books about the Arab Israeli conflict, she teaches history of the Middle East at the LUISS University in Rome, as a visiting professor. This article was first delivered as a speech at the YIVO Institute in New York City.

In 1967 I was a young communist, like most Italian youngsters. Bored by my rebellious behavior my family sent me to a Kibbutz in the upper Galilee, Neot Mordechai. I was quite satisfied there, the kibbutz used to give some money every month to the Vietcong. When the Six Day War began, Moshe Dayan spoke on the radio to announce it. I asked: "What is he saying?" and the comrades of Neot answered: "Shtuyot," silly things. During the war I took children to shelters; I dug trenches, and learned some simple shooting and acts of self defense. We continued working in the orchards, but were quick to identify the incoming Mig-im and the outgoing Mirage-im, chasing one another in the sky of the Golan Heights. [FULL TEXT]

COME KIDS: TIME TO PLAY KILLING THE JEWS

Accepting our limitations
By Caroline Glick
Jerusalem Post
8/1/03

It's summer camp season. As Israeli Jewish children are learning to macrame and swim, 300 of their Israeli Arab friends in the Galilee are learning other lessons. Channel 10 Wednesday broadcast footage from "Camp Return" by Kabul village in the Western Galilee. The story was picked up Thursday in Ma'ariv.

At Camp Return, children are not taught how to make beaded jewelry and popsicle stick houses. They are taught to aspire to kill Jews in suicide bombings.

Saama Vakim, one of the campers, displayed her new necklace to the TV camera. It is a pendant of the map of Israel embossed with a Palestinian flag. She also showed the reporter the "intifada pendant." It included the image of a boy throwing a stone. Saama explained that Jews have no right to live here and should "go back to where they came from to Poland, to Russia."

ETHNIC CLEANSING OF JEWS IN IRAQ: IGNORED HISTORY

From Honest Reporting
28 July 2003

While the Palestinian and Israel Prime Ministers visit Washington to pursue high-level diplomatic discussions, a simple yet extraordinary humanitarian event occurred in the Mideast on Friday. Six elderly Iraqi Jews -- remainders of what was once a vibrant and ancient community -- were flown to safety in Israel, reuniting with long-lost family.

The touching event was broadly covered by Western media, but when addressing the historical background of this story, the news outlets were remarkably vague:

SLANDER ABOUT THE SECURITY FENCE

From Honest Reporting
31 July 2003

Media coverage of Ariel Sharon's visit to Washington was dominated by one issue -- Israel's security fence, currently under construction in the West Bank. Journalists followed the lead of Palestinian Prime Minister Abbas, who lodged a complaint with President Bush regarding the fence during his visit last week, and Yassir Arafat, who on Tuesday called the security fence "a Berlin Wall."
